Made it to Aberdeen!
My body's all "Why are you up at 3am?" and will not believe me when I tell it it's actually past 11am.
So I'll leave you guys with the stunning revelation that it's cold here.

ETA: And now for a totally unrelated add-on! There's a bit of a kerfluffle in parts of tumblrverse about "Indian Steampunk art", started by an image that made me go O.o a lot (this artist really does seem to mean well & be willing to learn, from the commentary, but IMO is really not getting what colonialism does to agency.) Also, coming into the conversation via another artist (whose take on it is this, and who does not understand what appropriation is): Desis need to EDUCATE the poor artists or how are they to know, etc.

(Do they have any idea that there's anybody Desi writing and/or drawing this stuff? Probably not.)

This inspires me. I am going to get that outer painting done & my Jahanara pic sent off SOON dammit. And I am going to write the other artificer bird stories I have plotted out, too, dammit.

And while it is Not My Job to educate anyone, I will say two things, one aimed at each artist.
1) Period apparently-high-caste Hindus wearing leather? SIDE-EYE. Yes, it's complicated for many reasons, but, how about erring on the side of not going with eurocentric assumptions?
2) Assuming turbans are Sikh-specific? SIDE-EYE. Dude, google Mughal turbans and Rajput turbans ffs. They were RANK MARKERS, not religion markers. Double reason for a factory worker not to have one, especially since there are many forms of non-turban head covering to choose from for women in India.
(Though, also, if you say she's wearing a Sikh turban, it should maybe look like a Sikh turban.)

Given their tumblr convo, if they sees this post, I expect comment (1) to be taken well & comment (2) not to be.

We are having a serious cold snap right now, alas. Take care. And welcome to the United Kingdom!
shweta_narayanshweta_narayan on February 2nd, 2012 11:46 am (UTC)
Thank you :)
And it's all good! I have WARM CLOTHES.
Kari Sperringla_marquise_de_ on February 2nd, 2012 12:35 pm (UTC)
Aberdeen is a nice place, too.

Warm clothes are very, very good. I am a major fan of warm clothes, especially lightweight REI base layers that go well under dressy clothes.

It will be interesting to see what a change of climate (and continents) might do to help your lungs (let's hope it's help!). Many good wishes for an uneventful settling in!

Well, I've lived here before. The goal is *not* to let the place do the same thing to my health it did last time.
joycemochajoycemocha on February 2nd, 2012 03:32 pm (UTC)
Oh, sorry, I did not know you'd lived there before! Best of luck on avoiding health issues.

Yeah, the last two years of school before I ran away to california :) I missed 120 full days and some 70-odd half days of school in those two years, and that was just from the asthma. But! We now have a much better sense of what my allergies *are*, so we're better able to avoid them. And my parents' place here is totally hypoallergenic, so it can be done!

Yay for getting to Aberdeen!

And ugh yeah, reading the notes for that thread, with all the "OMG YAY THIS IS SO AWESOME" is so dispiriting.
shweta_narayanshweta_narayan on February 2nd, 2012 02:55 pm (UTC)
I saved myself by only reading your comments & the ones you responded to.

Glad you made it safely! (and yeah, sorry about the cold. It's a bit nippy in Europe currently).

The pileup of "foreign and exotic beauty" in the comments to the first picture is making me wince. (but I do appreciate the artist's attitude)
shweta_narayanshweta_narayan on February 2nd, 2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
I'm refusing to look at the comments cause I knew what they'd be coming in.

And thankyou :) Yeah we did expect the cold; at least I did. elsmi said he did? But he doesn't really know what seasons are, the California boy. He's learning fast :D
Mari Nessmariness on February 2nd, 2012 12:54 pm (UTC)
Scotland's cold? Well. I'm stunned.

Yay for making it! Yay for Scotland!
shweta_narayanshweta_narayan on February 2nd, 2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
I know, weird right? :D

Saira Alisairaali on February 2nd, 2012 02:44 pm (UTC)
Wait, that was *leather* in the first pic and not like, brown cotton? O.o?

Yay for making it safely to Scotland!
shweta_narayanshweta_narayan on February 2nd, 2012 03:00 pm (UTC)
Yes I was hoping it was brown cloth, but the comments say otherwise.

And :)
allegramallegram on February 2nd, 2012 06:43 pm (UTC)
I also read your comment and was shocked, I thought it was cloth myself..... sigh

Made it to Aberdeen!

Hello, Aberdeen!

Did you see this article about jumping-off points for Southeast Asian steampunk?

Yay making it to Aberdeen! Here's wishing you victory over allergens and artistic might.

Yay for successfully making it to Aberdeen!

I wouldn't be surprised if this person is aware of the status of cows in Hinduism and just hasn't thought about the implications.

(My personal little piece of clue for the day: I was previously unfamiliar with "Desi" and would have assumed it was a slur.)

Have a great time in Aberdeen!
And thanks for the heads-up on the steampunk art. There's a lot of that going on and some real discussions need to be had in the near retro-future.

Hi Shweta,

Welcome to the UK! All the very best with the Aberdeen-settlage:)

Chomiji: Yuya-Mahiro - girlfriendschomiji on February 2nd, 2012 11:09 pm (UTC)

Glad you have arrived safely!

And I wish people would stop carrying on about "oversensitive" and "get over it," as though the people whose cultures are being appropriated aren't still facing the repercussions of colonialism and racism in their everyday lives.
