Followup on FFO
Jake at FFO got me to:

1) Donate to PFLAG (to the value of one membership, since we can't really afford a second; don't remember if that membership is me or elsmi.
2) Finally get off my ass & join The Outer Alliance
3) Find some cool people making great posts through it.
4) By his disingenuous and whiny response (check out the final paragraphs added to the regarding content part of FFO's guidelines) solidified my total lack of desire ever to submit to FFO again or, really to read them ever again.

To wind that up, I want to link to four posts I think are awesome (I haven't read 'em all so this is not really a best-of list, it's just personal faves from what I read):

1) I like Josh Jasper's short 'n sweet response.
2) sandykidd discusses comparing mammals to malaria, with much all-round awesomeness.
3) As well as posting about FFO's queer-unfriendliness, tacithydra has taken on the impressive task of putting together a linky list of posts about this. Hats off; there are a lot!
4) Brandon Bell has a summary/wrap-up that discusses the problems with Jake Freivald's response to all this. (The post starts with a brief call for donations).

Yay for finally joining the Outer Alliance! And, of course, for donating to PFLAG. :)

Okay, full confession: the real reason I was delaying joining OA is that I have all sorts of learned outsider-anxiety and imposter-anxiety around explaining why I "should get to" join a group. Even when that's not what a group is asking (OA is after all only asking why one wishes to join).

Personally, I think you "should get to join" because you are awesome.

Aw, thank you :) I hope you still think that once you know me better!
Mostly I've managed to overcome childhood ostracism but... not totally, y'know? It's just a niggling thing that makes perfectly simple actions a daunting, especially when I am not otherwise doing so well.

Yeah. I "play" extrovert pretty well, but some days I'm tired or stressed or scared, and none of the programs will run. I think there's something fundamentally scary about walking into a group of people - something about being one very small thing, and moving toward what looks like a much, much bigger thing. (Or, for me, anyway.)

Edit: Also, adding this post to the latest round-up.

Did I say yes? Because, yes.

I got as far as "give a brief explanation of why you'd like to join" and closed the tab in panic. I'm all in favour of what they're doing, but I also don't feel entitled. I've done this about three times now. It's that "secret password to the clubhouse" thing. Oh well.

I did this too, before Jake pissed me off so much I went screw it I'm pushing through the anxiety & joining.

ftr, I said something like "Because I'm an ally and believe in what you're doing". Only with a bit more detail about personal & writer reasons. I don't think they're looking for more reason than that...

Yeah, I don't think Natania is too picky about your explanation for joining as long you clearly support what the group's all about. I do understand some people's reluctance due to "not feeling entitled", but allies who identify as straight are still very welcome in the group.

Have you spoken up on the Google Group yet? Some people are doing introduction posts. Others are just diving into one of the discussions.

Though there's like a billion posts on there now. Hope we get that forum soon.

I've been trying to figure out where to introduce m'self, actually.
