So I'll leave you guys with the stunning revelation that it's cold here.
ETA: And now for a totally unrelated add-on! There's a bit of a kerfluffle in parts of tumblrverse about "Indian Steampunk art", started by an image that made me go O.o a lot (this artist really does seem to mean well & be willing to learn, from the commentary, but IMO is really not getting what colonialism does to agency.) Also, coming into the conversation via another artist (whose take on it is this, and who does not understand what appropriation is): Desis need to EDUCATE the poor artists or how are they to know, etc.
(Do they have any idea that there's anybody Desi writing and/or drawing this stuff? Probably not.)
This inspires me. I am going to get that outer painting done & my Jahanara pic sent off SOON dammit. And I am going to write the other artificer bird stories I have plotted out, too, dammit.
And while it is Not My Job to educate anyone, I will say two things, one aimed at each artist.
1) Period apparently-high-caste Hindus wearing leather? SIDE-EYE. Yes, it's complicated for many reasons, but, how about erring on the side of not going with eurocentric assumptions?
2) Assuming turbans are Sikh-specific? SIDE-EYE. Dude, google Mughal turbans and Rajput turbans ffs. They were RANK MARKERS, not religion markers. Double reason for a factory worker not to have one, especially since there are many forms of non-turban head covering to choose from for women in India.
(Though, also, if you say she's wearing a Sikh turban, it should maybe look like a Sikh turban.)
Given their tumblr convo, if they sees this post, I expect comment (1) to be taken well & comment (2) not to be.
